Travel the world, meet loads of very different people and cultures and meanwhile have a positive impact during this journey.
Sounds too good? Well, we will try to do exactly that!
Meet Ia and Yannic. Ia is a very energetic and crazy girl from Korea and Yannic is the always worrying and funnily clumsy guy from Germany. Together we were anyway planning on making a big hitch-hiking trip through Asia, but we wanted to have a bigger aim on the way. This was at least partly inspired by the Travelmakers project that we both participated in in august and september 2014. In that project, we hitch-hiked in 50 days from Berlin to Istanbul and collected donations for a Syrian refugee home in Istanbul. Meanwhile, here in Germany, we were helping some refugees that lived arround the corner with their everyday life in a country that has one of the most frustrating bureaucratic systems and a small amount of Arabic-speakers. We noticed that it was often hard for women to learn German or go for a job as they often had to take care of the majority work in the household and arround the children.
So Ia came up with the idea to found an international restaurant in which she would give female refugees the opportunity to gain some independance through a job. This independance could be financial, but also reputational as the parents can share the task of feeding their family and act on an equal level. And just along the way it would also provide an easy way to learn German – this part Ia experienced herself while working in a bakery in Germany.
Spicyroad will be an adventurous and exciting journey with a lot of interesting encounters and a lot of fun. But it will also be the build-up for the restaurant-project. We want to collect the best recipes from all over the world to later offer these dishes in our restaurant, we want to learn from NGO’s which are dealing with refugees and feminism and support them if we can, and we want to get to know the places and countries we will see along the way. We will document our journey and experiences in form of pictures, videos and articles.
